What is Idletris?
Idletris is a free, browser-based incremental game that reimagines the classic falling-block puzzle as an exercise in automation. When you first load the page you play the way you always have: seven four-cell block shapes fall one at a time onto a ten-column well, and you slide and rotate them with the arrow keys to pack complete horizontal rows. Every row you clear pays out points.
The twist is what you do with those points. Instead of spending them on a bigger multiplier, you spend them on hiring AI players. Hand a board to an AI and it takes over completely: for each piece it simulates every rotation in every column, scores the resulting stack on how many lines it clears versus how many holes, bumps and height it leaves behind, and drops the piece wherever the math comes out best. The lines that AI clears earn points too, which you funnel straight back into faster AI, instant hard-drop placement, control over which piece comes next, and eventually a second board, a third, and so on up to seven boards running at once.
What makes Idletris different from both a normal puzzle game and a typical idle game is where the decisions live. There is no single score to chase with your reflexes and no simple buy-the-next-upgrade treadmill. The interesting question is always allocation: do you deepen one board's AI or open a new one? When a stack gets dangerous, do you pay to reset the board or jump back in and clear it by hand? And once all seven boards are humming, do you keep the run going or prestige — reset everything in exchange for stars that buy permanent, run-spanning upgrades? You can play it in a focused two-minute burst or leave it open in a tab and let the point economy compound.
How to Play
Idletris unfolds as a series of upgrade tiers. Each one changes how much of the game you are playing yourself and how much is running without you.
Playing by hand
Use the left and right arrow keys to move the active piece and the up arrow to rotate it; the down arrow speeds up its descent. Fill an entire row with blocks and it clears, awarding points. If pieces stack to the top of the board you are currently playing, that board is over — so early on, Idletris rewards your own stacking discipline.
Hard Drop
For a single point you permanently unlock Hard Drop for the whole game. After that, the space bar slams the current piece straight to the bottom instead of waiting for it to fall — faster manual play, and the same instant placement you will later buy for your AI.
Hiring an AI
Spending points to hire an AI on a board lets it play that board automatically, choosing a placement for every piece. A freshly hired AI is deliberate: it walks each piece across to its target column and rotation one step at a time.
AI Hard Drop
The next upgrade lets a board's AI place pieces instantly rather than nudging them into position, which sharply increases how quickly that board generates points.
AI Speed
You can buy up to five speed levels per board. Each level shortens the delay between the AI's moves, so a fully upgraded AI plays several times faster than a new hire.
Force Next Piece
Unlock this on a board and you can then pay a small amount per use to change the upcoming piece to any shape you want — handy for feeding an AI the long "I" piece it needs for a big clear, or setting up your own manual combo.
Take Control
On the board you are actively watching, you can pay to pause its AI and play the next thirty pieces yourself. It is the escape hatch for when an AI has built a lopsided stack you would rather untangle by hand.
Opening more boards
Once a board has every upgrade — AI hired, AI Hard Drop, all five speed levels and Force Next Piece — you can unlock the next board, up to a maximum of seven. Every new board's upgrades cost roughly twice as much as the equivalent upgrade on the board before it, so expansion is a genuine trade-off against deepening what you already have. A board that tops out can be reset for a fee so its AI keeps earning.
Prestige
When all seven boards are fully upgraded and you have cleared enough lines in the run, Prestige becomes available. Prestiging wipes your boards and points but grants stars — one for roughly every 5,000 lines you cleared. Stars are spent in the Prestige Shop on permanent upgrades that persist through every future run: double points, a discount on all upgrade costs, and automatic resetting of any board that loses.
Optional extras
A "Watch Ad" button grants a small point bonus for viewing a rewarded video, and an optional monthly leaderboard lets you submit a short name alongside your score.

There is no account system and no login. The game itself runs locally in your browser. The only information that leaves your device is what you choose to send: if you submit a score to the optional monthly leaderboard, the short name and score you enter are stored by our leaderboard provider. Advertising partners may also set cookies, as described in our Privacy Policy.
How does the AI actually work?
Each AI uses a heuristic search. For the current piece it tries every rotation in every column, simulates dropping the piece there, and rates the resulting board: completed lines are rewarded, while holes under blocks, an uneven surface and overall stack height are penalized. It then commits to the placement with the best rating. It is not machine learning — it is the kind of scoring function a strong falling-block puzzle bot uses, applied fresh to every piece.
What is prestige?
Prestige is the reset-for-power mechanic. Once all seven boards are maxed out and you have cleared enough lines, you can prestige to start a new run from scratch. In exchange you receive stars that buy permanent upgrades — double points, cheaper upgrades and auto-reset for lost boards — which stay with you across every run afterward.
Can I still play manually if I want to?
Absolutely. Every board starts under your control, and you can keep playing by hand as long as you like. Even after hiring an AI you can use Take Control to reclaim a board for the next thirty pieces.
Does my progress save if I close the tab?
Yes. Idletris autosaves to your browser's local storage every ten seconds and whenever you switch away from or close the tab, so your boards, upgrades and prestige stars are waiting when you come back. Saves live only on your device, so clearing your browser's site data erases them — use the 💾 save menu to export a save code as a backup or to move your progress to another device.

Idletris is a solo project from J3 Software LLC. It started as a "what if the block-stacking AI everyone writes as a coding exercise were the whole game?" experiment and grew into a small idle economy around that idea. The goal is a game that respects your time: quick to understand, fine to leave running, and honest about being ad-supported rather than full of pop-ups and countdown timers.
